Rave: Team Human

I was excited to read Team Human just from the title alone. I’m also a big fan of Justine Larbalestier’s books (especially Liar), and I’ve heard good things about Sarah Rees Brennan although I haven’t read anything else by her.

I was predisposed to like this novel because, to be honest, I’m not super into vampires, and especially not into vampire romances. Who wants to date a stupid vampire? Best case scenario, you end up a vampire forever. Gross. Worst case scenario: death. (Which I guess is really the worst case scenario for any kind of relationship.)

Team Human is about Mel, who lives in New Whitby, a city founded by vampires. But just she lives in a vampire city doesn’t mean she likes vampires, or even that she sees them very often. Most vampires keep to themselves, in the vampire part of town, and none of them go to her school. At least not until Francis shows up. Mel’s best friend, Cathy, falls in love with Francis. He loves her too, and Mel is disgusted both by how sappy the two of them are and also by the thought that her best friend might one day be turned into a vampire, too. Continue reading
